PORTFOLIO

                               STATEMENT

My new body of work "The Things We Carry" takes a look at society and emotions and how it may be looked at from some angle.  An innocence that has brought no knowledge of symbols and meanings and what that perspective would look like.

Sometimes, the emotional expression explodes in the carving of the board, or intensity of line: building a bridge between visual and emotional feelings. One function of the work is to generate new insight.  Communicating a new graphical interpretation formed with familiar imagery; a zone for the viewer to recall past connections, while establishing new ones.  This process helps me move forward and perhaps the audience it captures.

I draw my imagery from the environment, events and circumstances that impact our everyday life and how we make our own connections.  The intent is to follow the emotion, extract symbols, abstract or figurative to reveal an image of how they intertwine and connect because as human beings we look for these connections. It is a journey through the painting itself one thing overlaps and influences the next. "Vision", and my pieces for Magic and dreams was especially influenced by the mixed emotions our country faces in this time.

The work is created through a layering process; then a method of exploring and searching for symbols embedded in the surface, that surround the emotion. Sometimes, the emotional expression explodes in the carving of the board, or intensity of the line; building a bridge between visual and emotional feelings.  One function of the work is to invoke a new meaning to symbols that we have established relationships with, and take it to a new place.  The work communicates a new interpretation formed with familiar imagery; a zone for the viewer to recall past connections, while establishing new ones.  This process helps me move forward and perhaps the audience it captures.
